Energy-Star Full Renovation on Shiverick Rd, Brewster, MA
A (nearly) complete renovation of this existing home has been getting underway the past couple of weeks over in Sesuit Neck. A super cool little cape-style home, it came with an existing three-season enclosed porch structure, as well as a bare-bones main home and an unfinished second floor as well. A great clean palette to start with and get in there and make something awesome. We’re taking down the porch structure, pouring a new foundation and adding a kitchen/dining/sitting area off to the side; finishing the second floor with full bathroom and a sitting space and a bedroom, and remodeling the downstairs as well. I’m aiming for a Tier III Energy Star rating on this renovation…and I think we can do it. A3 Architects have worked with the homeowner to come up with the scheme and plan, and we are working with Bruce Torrey and Building Diagnostics out of Sandwich to do the blower-door tests as we work through the process. We’ve come up with a plan to achieve the Tier III rating, and now we’re putting it into action.
Sesuit Neck Energy-Star home
We’re all wrapped up over here at this complex renovation in Sesuit Neck for Elaine and Dane. What began as a run-down, not-liveable little cottage that was built by Elaine’s own father’s hands back in the early 50’s has now been turned into a highly-efficient, beautiful home in the village.
Let there be light...
A huge aspect of this project was finally being able to get some natural sunlight into this home. Originally, it was dark, musty, moldy, dark, and even darker.
Can we get to Tier III Energy Star? Sure can....
Energy Star has a rating program for remodels/renovations and updating a home. We’re going for the highest rating they have, Tier III, and after consulting with Building Diagnostics out of Sandwich, MA I truly think we can do it. Just to be sure of how we’re tackling this, I did the mock-up of the existing wall and roof construction and what will be our new air-sealing and insulation path. Love it.
Getting underway and underground....
About time we’ve been able to get things underway here. Winter took its toll, but we’ve finally gotten shovel (excavator) in ground here and are rocking and rolling. After coming up with our plan-of-action, we removed the existing porch enclosure with the yank of a heavy chain old-school style and down it came to make way for the new actually-insulated kitchen and dining space. New septic was dug out going down further than I’ve seen one in quite a while due to the clay; interior is gutted; insulation plan and mock-up has been completed; and next week we begin that phase and the framing of the new addition.
